Sony PS3 Slim Console Review

The high cost of PS3 was one of the main reasons why it wasn’t that popular among the larger gaming community. PS3 was slowly being phased out by Sony, where PS3 Slim is being showcased as a good replacement. The low cost is good news for those wanting to buy PS3, however those considering upgrading from PS3, the Slim version has no new features to offer.
Except for the reduced power consumption and the price, there are no real changes compared to original PS3. The 45 nm manufacturing process has brought down the power consumption by about 34%, where the price is down by a good $100. The finish of the system has also been changed and the new PS3 Slim comes with a matte finish, rather than a glossy one.
PS3 Slim cannot really be called an upgrade of PS3, rather a revamp. Sony has barely made any changes over the older version. The only noticeable change is the noise made by the disc drive. It seems to be a little louder than in PS3. It’s not a big issue when watching a movie on Blu-ray disc. However, while playing games it can become a little irritating.
Both PS3 and PS3 Slim support playback of MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 from disc-based media or USB ports. Other than this, it also enables you to see JPEG images. The back of the system has features very similar to PS3. It comes with an Ethernet jack, HDMI output, proprietary AV output of PlayStation and optical digital audio output.
If you already own a PS3, the Slim version does not offer anything great, unless of course you need to replace your PS3 for technical reasons. But those thinking of buying the PS3 and waiting for Sony to slash the prices, PS3 Slim can be a great choice. It’s a great console which looks the part to. This may be the PS3 upgrade you were looking for.
